avengers: girl on fire

academic quiet thrills!

- Our professor let us watch the Queen of the Night's big aria from The Magic Flute after we begged her and afterward said, "I just loved watching your faces light up while watching her. Stunning, isn't it?" Later we watched Papageno and Papagena's duet and she exclaimed, "Isn't this the silliest thing in the world! It's impossible not to smile." She told us to watch the scene if we ever felt down. All this was after she'd asked me, before class, if I enjoyed the course. Uh, yeah I do!

- The instructor saying, after a particularly trying week, "You all looked like you'd been hit by a truck on Tuesday. I hope today's reading was easier?" (it was). He later entertained us with his imitation of a bunny rabbit with no legs.

- My friend and I went to queer faculty-student ice cream social. I saw one of my professors there and grinned my head off -- he sat back and laughed at me. We also met a married couple from the Spanish department, one of whom was the head of the department. Her partner hurriedly assured us that , not to worry, they were married before she was made head of the department. No shenanigans!

(eta)- One more. A professor and I agreed to haunt our library's Special Collections when we die. There just aren't any ghosts in the new library building!

In an attempt to distract myself from news re. Winehouse, I bring you...

...a few small thrills from the past 12 or so hours.

-  After a night out with lovely friends in a trendy, over-priced club with ridiculous people in it, getting a glorious jacket potato with melty cheese and tuna, black coffee and cigarettes whilst reading Moomin in a little greasy spoon cafe, and feeling not at all guilty, just exhaustedly contented.

- Attempting to find one's hungover way home from an unfamiliar part of London.

- In the endeavour, passing a little florist's shop, ducking inside on the spur of the moment, and pretending to be Mrs Dalloway while buying some potted flowers from cool, interesting lady who I now have a slight crush on.

- Said lady laughing delightedly and saying, "that's probably the sweetest thing I've seen," when, upon realising I'd nothing to carry my potted plant in, stuck them in bowler hat I'd been wearing.

-  Carrying the flowers home in the hat (if you can envisage an ungainly girl in a black prom dress and cowboy boots staggering tiredly along, cigarette hanging from mouth, hat and flowers clutched comically before her, to the tune of this Collapse ) , then that's...roughly how I felt).

-  The look on mam's face when I handed her the hatted flowers.  <3

Randomly checking Gmail, and the first preview line of an e-mail from a friend jumping out at me: "Hi [name], you are totally awesome for sending me this [...]" after I'd sent a list of potential housemates for him on a whim earlier today. I didn't expect any reply and it was a small thing I did, but it just made my day for "you are totally awesome" to unexpectedly be the first thing I see in my inbox. *warm fuzzies*
